Originally, fire hose wasn’t designed to become a dog toy. It was designed to be dragged, soaked, folded, stored, and put to work in demanding conditions. When we first started working with retired fire hose from local Washington firehouses, that was exactly what caught our attention.
Our team at Bolder K9 saw a material that had finished one tough job but still had plenty of useful life left in it. So we gave it another one.
That retired hose became our Upcycled Fire Hose Tug and, later, our Squeaky Snake. More recently, working with fire hose led us in another direction: using new specialty hose to create our limited-edition Premium Fire Hose Tug Toys.
Today, we use fire hose in two different ways at Bolder K9—upcycling retired hose from Washington firehouses and working with new specialty fire hose when we want greater consistency and a premium construction.
Different sourcing stories. Same reason we keep coming back to the material. Fire hose makes a seriously useful dog tug toy.
Why Fire Hose Makes Such a Great Dog Toy Material
The appeal of fire hose starts with what it was originally built to do. Fire hose needs to remain flexible while handling demanding physical use, perfect for energetic dogs. It gets moved, folded, dragged, exposed to water, stored, deployed again, and generally treated like working equipment rather than something delicate.
Those characteristics translate surprisingly well to interactive dog toys.
A tug gets grabbed, pulled, twisted, dropped, covered in slobber, tossed into training bags, and dragged through grass and mud. Fire hose gives us a dense, substantial bite area that can stand up well to that kind of interactive play.
That doesn’t mean it's indestructible. No dog toy is, whether you have a little puppy or a big German Shepherd.
But for supervised tugging, training, engagement, and interactive play, fire hose gives us a combination of durability, flexibility, and structure that makes a lot of sense.
It also handles messy conditions well. Mud, rain, grass, and dog slobber are part of using gear in the real world, especially here in Washington. Fire hose is a practical material to clean after those adventures and bring back out for another session.
And it doesn't need a complicated design to do its job.
Give the dog a substantial bite surface, give the handler somewhere comfortable to hold, and you have a simple piece of gear that can be genuinely useful.
It Started With Retired Fire Hose From Washington
Our original fire hose toys started with upcycling. We source retired hose from local firehouses here in Washington and turn portions of that material into dog toys once its first job is finished.
We don't choose retired fire hose simply because “recycled” sounds good on a label. We use it because the material itself makes sense for what we're building.
That's an important distinction.
Fire hose already gives us many of the characteristics we want in a tug: structure, flexibility, durability, and a substantial bite surface. Instead of automatically starting with newly manufactured material, we're able to give some of that retired hose another purpose.
Because we're working with genuine used fire hose, every batch can be a little different. Colors, markings, texture, and appearance may vary.
We think that's part of what makes these toys interesting.
The hose had a job before it reached our shop.
Two Ways We Use Fire Hose at Bolder K9
As we've spent more time making fire hose toys, our approach to the material has evolved.
Today, we use it in two distinct ways: retired Washington fire hose for our upcycled toys and new specialty fire hose for our Premium Tug.
Neither approach replaces the other.
The Upcycled Fire Hose Tug
Our Upcycled Fire Hose Tug with BioThane® Handle is the simplest expression of the original idea.
Take genuine retired fire hose. Turn it into a useful bite area. Add a comfortable BioThane® handle for the human on the other end. Build it here in Washington.

For dogs that enjoy a traditional game of tug or handlers who use tug as an interactive training reward, it's a straightforward piece of gear that's easy to throw into a training bag and bring out when it's time to play.

The Squeaky Snake
Then there are dogs that want a little more chaos.
Some dogs don't just want to bite and pull a compact tug. They want to grab something long, shake it, thrash it around, and preferably make some noise while they're doing it.
That's where our Squeaky Snake Upcycled Firehose Toy comes in.
The Squeaky Snake takes the same upcycling idea and turns it into a very different style of toy. Its longer shape gives dogs a larger target to grab and shake, while built-in squeakers add another layer of engagement for dogs motivated by sound.
A BioThane® handle gives the handler a comfortable place to hold the toy during interactive play.
It's a good reminder that there isn't one universal “best” tug toy. Some dogs want compact and firm. Others want movement and squeakers.
And some seem convinced every game is better when they can dramatically whip the toy from side to side.
Premium Fire Hose Tugs: A Different Approach
Working with upcycled hose eventually made us appreciate something beyond the recycling story:
We really like fire hose itself.
That made us curious about what we could build if we started with new specialty hose instead of retired hose.
Our limited-edition Premium Fire Hose Tug Toy uses new 1½-inch single-jacket fire hose with a tightly woven polyester exterior and synthetic rubber lining.
Starting with new hose gives us something reclaimed material can't always provide: consistency.
Retired fire hose has already lived a working life, so appearance, feel, markings, and previous wear can naturally vary. The Premium Fire Hose Tug starts fresh, giving us a more uniform material from one tug to the next.
We pair it with ¾-inch Super Heavy BioThane® handles and currently make it in two configurations: an 8-inch bite area with one handle and a 12-inch bite area with handles on both ends.
These are handmade by us here in Washington in limited batches, so availability may vary.
Upcycled vs. Premium Fire Hose: Which Is Better?
We don't really see this as a better-versus-worse question.
Choose an Upcycled Fire Hose Tug when you like the idea of retired Washington fire hose getting a second job and don't mind the natural variation that comes with reclaimed material.
Choose the Premium Fire Hose Tug when you want new specialty hose with a more consistent appearance, feel, and construction.
Both use real fire hose. Both are handmade by us here in Washington. Both are designed for interactive tugging rather than unsupervised chewing.
They're simply two approaches to a material we think works exceptionally well for tug toys.

Being a small gear company also means we're comfortable with the natural variation that comes with reclaimed materials. A different marking or slightly different appearance isn't necessarily a flaw.
Sometimes it's simply evidence that the material had another job first.
Fire Hose Tug Toys Are for Tugging—Not Chewing
This distinction matters.
Durable does not mean chew-proof.
Our fire hose toys are designed for interactive tugging, engagement, training rewards, and supervised play. They are not intended to be left with a dog as an unsupervised chew toy.
Tugging and chewing create very different types of wear. When a dog settles down and repeatedly gnaws one seam, edge, handle, or section of material, that concentrated chewing can damage even very durable toys.
Putting the tug away when the game is finished can help extend its useful life. For many dogs, it can also help keep the toy valuable as a special reward that appears when it's time to engage with you.
Caring for Your Fire Hose Tug
Fire hose toys don't require complicated maintenance.
Inspect the toy regularly, especially around seams, edges, handles, and squeaker areas. If it gets muddy or dirty, clean it and allow it to dry before storing it.
Most importantly, use it for the job it was designed to do: interactive play.
If your dog settles down for a serious chewing session, that's usually a good sign that tug time is over.
No dog toy lasts forever, and a heavily worn toy should be retired when damage makes continued use questionable.

The best choice depends more on how your dog plays than what breed they are.

We don't think sustainability should require making a worse product.
Our upcycled fire hose toys work because the reclaimed material is already well suited to the job. We're giving useful retired hose from local Washington firehouses another purpose rather than choosing a recycled material purely for the sake of a marketing claim.
That's the kind of reuse we like.
Practical first. The sustainability benefit follows naturally.
And when we want different characteristics—like greater consistency—we're comfortable taking another route and building our Premium Tug from new specialty hose.
Good gear doesn't have to fit neatly into one philosophy.
It needs to make sense for the job.
From Firehouse to Tug Toy
Our fire hose toys started with a simple question:
What if this material isn't actually finished yet?
Retired Washington fire hose became our Upcycled Fire Hose Tug. Then it became the Squeaky Snake.
Working with that material made us appreciate fire hose enough to explore new specialty hose, which eventually became our Premium Fire Hose Tug.
That's one of the things we enjoy about making our gear ourselves. We get to keep experimenting with materials, designs, and different ways of building useful equipment for dogs and their people.
Sometimes the next dog toy doesn't start with a sketch of a dog toy.
Sometimes it starts with a material that's already proven it can work hard—and asking what else it might be good at.
For fire hose, we think tugging is a pretty great second career.
