The question behind the craft

What does “handmade” actually mean?

Handmade shouldn't be a vague label. At Bolder K9, it describes a repeatable sequence of decisions and hands-on work: selecting materials, measuring and cutting webbing, preparing connection points, assembling hardware, finishing exposed ends, and packing the order.

It also means a leash is built around the options a customer chooses. Below, we walk through the six stages of our workshop process and explain where hand assembly can make a practical difference—and where it is important not to overstate the benefits.

01—06 / Behind the build

Six steps. One leash.

These are the steps for our Chicago-screw-assembled handmade leash designs. Construction details differ for sewn or specialty models.

01

Materials, selected by us

We personally source the materials that go into each leash: genuine BioThane® coated webbing, carefully selected leash clips and other hardware. The goal is to choose components that suit the specific design, rather than treating every piece of hardware as interchangeable.

Handmade leash process step 1: Materials, selected by us
02

Measured for your order

Each leash begins with your order. We measure and cut the BioThane® to the specified length, allowing the finished piece to reflect the configuration you selected rather than a one-size-fits-all batch.

03

Ends shaped and holes punched

We use an end punch to give cut ends a clean, finished profile. Where a design uses Chicago screws, we punch the hardware holes so the components can be aligned and assembled.

04

Chicago screws secured

For designs that use Chicago screws, we assemble the connections by hand and apply permanent adhesive to the screw threads. The intent is to help resist loosening during normal use; it does not eliminate the need to inspect connections.

05

Cut ends sealed

We apply waterproof sealer to exposed cut ends as a finishing step intended to help protect the underlying webbing from fraying and moisture. The finished leash still needs normal care and inspection.

Packed in Washington

After assembly and finishing, we package each item ourselves in our Washington workshop. This hands-on final stage keeps fulfillment close to the people who made the leash.

The practical payoff

Why handmade can be a better way to build.

The advantage isn't magic strength. It's the ability to control choices and pay attention to individual details.

01

Made to the order

Custom measuring and cutting make it possible to deliver the length and configuration the customer actually selected, rather than forcing a compromise with standard inventory.

02

Material choices are intentional

Personally procuring BioThane® and hardware gives the maker direct control over component selection and the opportunity to match parts to the intended design.

03

Details get individual attention

End shaping, hole placement, fastening and sealing are performed as distinct steps. That creates opportunities to notice and correct visible issues during assembly.

04

Closer connection to the workshop

Making and packing in one Washington workshop can make it easier to trace how an item was built and address questions about a specific order.

A useful distinction

Handmade doesn't mean indestructible.

Handmade leashes can offer more individualized attention, flexible customization, and direct control over finishing. They are not inherently stronger, safer, or more reliable than every mass-manufactured leash. A well-designed factory product may have excellent materials, precise production, and rigorous testing.

For Bolder K9, the meaningful promise is a documented, hands-on build process—not an unverified claim that hand assembly guarantees superior performance. Reliability depends on the entire system: webbing, hardware, connections, correct use, maintenance, and inspection.

Handmade leash FAQs

Straight answers about construction, care, and what handmade really means.

Are handmade dog leashes stronger than factory-made leashes?

Not automatically. Strength depends on the webbing, hardware, connection design, assembly quality, and use. A well-engineered factory-made leash can outperform a poorly made handmade one. Handmade construction offers Bolder K9 more direct control over materials and finishing, but does not by itself establish a higher breaking strength.

What is BioThane® and why use it for handmade leashes?

BioThane® is a branded coated-webbing material. Its easy-clean surface and suitability for wet or muddy routines make it practical for everyday dog gear. As with any leash, hardware and connections are important parts of the complete design.

Why do you use Chicago screws?

On leash designs that use them, Chicago screws mechanically join the folded webbing and hardware connection points. Bolder K9 applies permanent adhesive during assembly to help resist loosening. Connections should still be inspected regularly.

Does waterproof end sealer make the entire leash waterproof?

No. The sealer is applied to exposed cut ends as a finishing measure. BioThane®'s coated surface is easy to clean, but metal hardware, connection points, and the overall product still need inspection and appropriate care after water exposure.

Is every Bolder K9 leash assembled with Chicago screws?

No. This page describes the workshop process for Chicago-screw-assembled designs. Some Bolder K9 products, including the Professional Sewn leash, use sewn connections instead. The exact construction depends on the product.

Can I choose a custom length and clip?

Customization depends on the specific leash listing. Many Bolder K9 designs offer length and hardware options. Check the product page for available choices before ordering.

Where are Bolder K9 leashes made and packed?

Bolder K9 describes these handmade leash assembly and packaging steps as taking place in its Washington workshop. Materials and hardware are personally procured; that does not mean every raw component is manufactured in Washington.

How should I care for a handmade BioThane® leash?

Wipe away dirt and rinse after muddy or wet use. Dry and inspect the clip, Chicago screws or other connections, and exposed edges. Retire gear with damaged webbing, loose hardware, or compromised closures.
